The uninhabited island of Kaho’olawe is a sacred place. Not just to native Hawaiians – but to everyone who cherishes the culture and history of our host population. State funding for the continued stewardship of “The Forbidden Island” is in jeopardy. Today, the Kaho’olawe Island Reserve Commission (KIRC) released the following urgent statement:

“It’s June 15th: the LAST day of our month-long Aloha Kaho`olawe 2015 campaign.

“From all of us at the KIRC, we extend our most deep-felt mahalo to those that have given and/ or shared the news of this important appeal. The support we’ve seen in the press, social media and groundswell of our `ohana has taught us much. We have some tough decisions to make, and will share the results along the way. In the meantime, we ask you one more time to please consider joining yourself or a loved one as a member today at http://www.gofundme.com/alohakahoolawe2015.

“While the 30-day campaign will close at midnight, our Membership Program will absolutely continue (and the GoFundMe site will remain OPEN until further notice), as we gain momentum in preparation for our 2016 legislative appeal.

“YOUR NAME ON OUR MEMBERSHIP ROSTER MEANS SO MUCH. Let’s show our decision makers how many lives Kaho`olawe has impacted – either through firsthand experience or as a symbol of hope, resilience, culture, community building or the multitudes of options held in the hearts & minds of those it has touched. “
